Renowned botanical artist David Lee Pereira was entrusted with the artistic transformation of the Wildwood water tank, working in collaboration with Just Another Agency to create a striking visual masterpiece.

This stunning artwork, which adorns the CFA water tank, draws its inspiration from the native sun orchid, blending the beauty of nature with the distinct character of the local environment.

The central focus of the mural is Thelymitra ixioides, commonly known as the spotted sun orchid or dotted sun orchid. This exquisite species is native to the southern and eastern regions of Australia, as well as New Zealand.

The orchid features a single, long, slender, dark green leaf and can produce up to ten delicate flowers. The flowers, which vary in color, are most commonly found in shades of blue and purple, often adorned with small, dark blue spots. As a species, it is highly variable, and its appearance can resemble Thelymitra juncifolia, which has smaller flowers but shares the same vibrant beauty.

The mural’s bright and vivid portrayal of the sun orchid is complemented by the inclusion of a giant, larger-than-life Praying Mantis, adding a sense of drama and scale to the artwork. The striking contrast between the vivid, eye-catching colors of the flowers and the towering presence of the insect stands out boldly against the backdrop of Hume City’s rural landscape.

This artwork serves not only as a celebration of the region’s native flora but also as a captivating visual landmark, merging the natural world with the dynamic creativity of contemporary art. The design’s boldness and vibrancy breathe new life into the Wildwood water tank, making it a truly unforgettable feature in the rural surroundings.
