Location: Point Cartwright, Buddina, Qld

Important Information

There is a car park at Point Cartwright but it is not suitable for caravans or buses. There is also a street sign at the corner of Gulai Street and Pacific Boulevard showing that no "U-Turn" is possible at the end of Pacific Boulevard for caravans.

The nearest car park suitable for caravans is on Harbour Parade and is about a 750 metre walk to the tower.

The car park at Point Cartwright is only a 200 metre walk to the tower and lighthouse. There are walking paths down to the beach and there are also toilets at the car park. Amazing coastal view as well.

The Story Behind The Mural

One of my favourite painted water reservoirs is the one located at Point Cartwright. It can be found on the headland in the Beacon Lighthouse Reserve in Buddina, Queensland.

The water tank was first painted in March 2016 by The Zookeeper, Drapl and Jordon Bruce, of the art installation group, Jugglers Art Space. It took 20 full days and used approximately 400 litres of paint.

Titled ‘Subsurface’ and designed by The Zookeeper, the mural featured a whale, a turtle and fish all swimming beneath the sea.

The artwork was commissioned by Unitywater and the Sunshine Coast Council and stood proud for many years atop the hill at Beacon Lighthouse Reserve and was even visible to cruise ships passing out at sea.

The design ‘Subsurface’ received more than half of the public’s vote, edging out four other designs to take pride of place on the reservoir.

The make over

By late 2021 the mural had started to wear due to its close proximity to the sea. So after 5 years of standing tall the mural was wiped clean. Then in early 2022 the team of Brightsides, The Zookeeper & Drapl returned to bring back the mural to its former glory.
