Artist Sam Bates, aka Smug, completed the Horsham Silo Art in May 2022.

The mural is titled The Yangga Dyata which means 'Walking on Country'  and it stands proud celebrating the significant story of Yanggendyinanyuk a Wotjobaluk warrior's story of leadership, resilience and significant legacy.

Yanggendyinanyuk, meaning 'His Walking Feet'  in the language of the Wergaia People was born in 1834 in Wotjobaluk Country, in the Wimmera Region of North Western Victoria. He lived a life marked by extraordinary achievements in leadership and sportsmanship. A Gamaty, meaning 'Black Cockatoo' was his totem.

He was publicly celebrated for his extraordinary tracking skills in finding the Cooper-Duff children The ‘Lost in the Bush’ story and for his part in the first Indigenous cricket tour to England and he also
witnessed a great loss of clan and Country.

Sharing the story of Yanggendyinanyuk in mural form signals how the Horsham community chooses to see its' future self' through the telling of its past. Importantly it visually and symbolically places the legacy of a truly remarkable Aboriginal leader that epitomises power, resilience, strength and achievement across the
redundant agricultural infrastructure.

The project hopefully will bring new life and focus to the region through a commitment to reconciliation and respect and as a consequence, invite visitors and residents to explore our rich Aboriginal heritage and living culture, led by our region's first people. The artwork within the Silo Activation Project is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria's Creative Activation funding and Horsham Rural City Council.
