THE sacrifices made by Gunditjmara servicemen and women are recognised in a new Indigenous war memorial mural in Heywood.

Internationally-acclaimed street artist Adnate was commissioned as the lead for the project and a local Indigenous artist, Levi Geebung assisted.

Adnate brings extensive experience and passion to the project having worked with Indigenous communities on numerous projects over the past decade, including the Ngatanwarr (welcome) mural on the South West Tafe building in Warrnambool.

"Being given the opportunity to paint Indigenous culture has completely changed my life. For Indigenous people, I feel it is important to communicate their history of struggle, and just as important to represent their people in a positive and beautiful light," he said.

A local Indigenous artist will work alongside and be mentored by Adnate to create the memorial incorporating their styles to tell the story of our Indigenous servicemen and women.

The project team are excited to announce the lead artists who will commence collaboration and community consultation on January 22 to ensure the community are fully engaged in the process.

Project lead Emily Falla said the mural will serve as a conversation piece highlighting the significant sacrifices made by all Gunditjmara servicemen and women.

The project was initiated by Leadership Great South Coast 2020 Alumni and supported by the Victorian State Government, Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Corporation, Wannon Water, and the Glenelg Shire.
